About this project
Basalf was born out of a problem I faced. At the end of 2024, I struggled with the limitations of Supabase's free tier—an incredibly useful service, but one that restricted me to just two projects at a time. This frustration led me to the idea of building my own Supabase/Pocketbase/Firebase alternative. Since all I really needed was a free serverless database, I focused on creating my own database-as-a-service.
I chose Next.js primarily for its API functions and opted for MySQL as my storage solution, wanting to deepen my knowledge of using it with JavaScript. To make Basalf easier to use, I also developed an NPM package, which serves as an SDK.
While this project is not yet complete, I'm genuinely proud of it. I hope my friends and I can successfully bring Lowback—another project in this portfolio and the spiritual successor to Basalf—to life.
